This study aims to analyze the impact of food and nutrition insecurity (FNI) on age–grade distortion among Brazilian students enrolled in basic education. To this end, matching techniques and reweighting methods were employed, followed by a multivalued treatment approach to estimate, in a differentiated manner, the effects of distinct levels of FNI on school delay. The results indicate that severe FNI affects students of both sexes in both urban and rural areas of the country. Specifically, the effects are more pronounced among female students in urban areas. These findings underscore the importance of public policies that are sensitive to gender and territorial inequalities, as the effects of FNI on education vary according to the context analyzed, with a greater burden on socioeconomically vulnerable populations.
