Exports sophistication, economic growth and income convergence in Brazilian states between 2016 and 2019
Keywords:
Exports sophistication, Convergence, GrowthAbstract
This paper proposes to analyze the real average per worker income dynamics of the Brazilian states together with the evolution of selected determinants of economic growth, with emphasis on the role of productive sophistication, in order to investigate the hypothesis of income convergence and positive effects of sophistication for growth. Therefore, the measurement of sophistication indicators of Brazilian state exports and their use in equations of economic growth and income convergence will serve the proposed objectives. Using spatial econometric methods, the results pointed to the existence of an income convergence process when controlled for other factors determining product growth, in addition to the initial income. With a relatively high rate of convergence of income, whose half-life does not exceed ten years. This process allows only slowly reducing the social and economic disparities between the Brazilian states. In addition, the measures of sophistication of the exports used in the work were statistically significant and with the expected signal, implying a positive effect of the sophistication of the products exported by each state to their respective average per worker income growth rate.
