Evaluation of the Local Development Potential of Mantiqueira

Abstract

This article aims to characterize the local development of the municipalities encompassing the Serra da Mantiqueira through socioeconomic and environmental aspects. For this purpose, a specific definition of the region encompassed by the Serra da Mantiqueira was employed. Through Exploratory Factor Analysis, four latent factors and a synthetic indicator were developed. Additionally, a ranking of municipalities was elaborated, and the typologies of their clusters were identified. Finally, Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis was used to verify the spatial dependence of the region. The results pointed out that the Mantiqueira has a great heterogeneity regarding the four dimensions and that the road network has an important role for the development of the municipalities of the region.
