The relationship between basic sanitation and health is increasingly inserted in studies of the economic sciences, in view of the concern with social well-being. In this sense, this study analyzes the spatial issues that involve the effects of access to inadequate sanitation conditions on infant mortality rates for Brazilian states in the years 1991, 2000 and 2010. For this, spatial panel data models were used, the infant mortality rate (0 to 1 year) and childhood mortality rate (0 to 5 years) being used as dependent variables. The results indicate that inadequate access to sanitation services has a positive impact on infant mortality and mortality in childhood. Likewise, there is a spillover effect between neighboring municipalities on infant mortality rates with regard to inadequate sanitation conditions.
