WHO DOES HUNGER IN BRAZIL? A REGIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE DETERMINANTS OF STRONG FOOD INSECURITY IN BRAZILIAN HOUSEHOLDS
Abstract
The objective of this paper is to investigate the profile of the individuals who live in households with Strong Food Insecurity – SFI in Brazilian regions, that is, someone whose at some point have experienced quantitative restriction of food (hunger). To this goal, it uses the information obtained from the 2013 National Household Survey regarding the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA) to construct a dichotomous variable representing the hunger and, through this, obtain conditional probabilities in a logit model. In the sample 17.5 million people reported having been hungry at some point. The results obtained in regional analysis show that the chances of having some kind of food restriction are higher for individuals with low education, income less than two minimum wages and working on informal occupations. The study contributes to the literature by showing how different factors beyond income help to explain hunger in Brazil, such as family structure and regional economic inequalities.Downloads
