Obesity is a public health problem affecting millions of people worldwide. In Brazil, this condition has been rapidly increasing. This study aims to assess to what extent obesity impacts individuals' participation in the workforce in different regions of Brazil. Secondary data from the Surveillance of Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases by Telephone Survey of the Brazilian Unified Health System (VIGITEL DATASUS) from 2006 to 2018 were used to construct a pooled logit econometric model. The main results indicate that obese individuals have an 18 percentage point lower probability of being employed compared to individuals with a healthy weight. However, this penalty is gender-specific; obesity adversely affects women and favors men. Additionally, despite being less socioeconomically developed, the North and Northeast regions showed less discrimination in this regard.
