Concentrated dispersion of intra-urban employment: theoretical models and empirical approaches
Keywords:
Spatial structure, Employment spreading, Business centers and subcentersAbstract
The concentrated dispersion of employment has relevant public policy implications. The emergence of new employment centers affects equilibrium price drivers, making land prices higher, wages having to be offset by such a rise. These new places increase demand for a transport system capable of gathering cheaper labor force in more distant places and, consequently, reducing the spatial mismatch between supply and demand markets. Given the importance of the theme and the lack of a systematic study, this article discusses the relevance of the economic analysis of job sprawl within cities and systematizes the empirical methodologies for identifying centralities and subcentralities. To this end, it uses a methodological approach called forward chaining, which is the identification of documents from the previously selected group. The results point to the evolution of theoretical models by microfounding the models developed by the German School and especially by addressing the existence of multiple centers. Under the empirical approach, identification methods are focusing on econometric estimations and identification strategies that consider labor market dynamics intertemporally.
