The aim of this study is to create a Municipal Rural Development Index (MRDI) and to verify the spatial distribution of this index in the Northwest mesoregion of Rio-Grandense. To do this, factor analysis is used to identify the common factors associated with the degree of rural development in the 216 municipalities that make up the mesoregion studied, as well as exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA). As main results, it was observed that the municipality of Palmeira das Missões has the highest MRDI, while São José do Herval has the lowest MRDI. In addition, it is possible to observe that the municipalities belonging to the microregion of Frederico Westphalen are the ones with the smallest while the municipalities located in the south-central region have the highest rates.
